The Enduring Human Spirit

Frieda, a timid woman of little means, born on the precipice of the 20th Century, desperately wants to protect the people she loves from the vagaries of life that she has suffered, but in doing so drives them further away. Can she find a path to both the happiness and security she seeks?

Frieda's Story

Near the close of the 1940s, just as the U.S. involvement in Korea is coming into focus, Frieda and her strong-willed daughter Helen are at odds over whether Helen, a vibrant 23-year-old nurse, should join the U.S. Army. Helen wants to experience other countries, test her mettle and live life to its fullest, and is convinced a career as an Army nurse will allow her to do just that. Frieda, still grieving the long-ago death of her beloved brother Adam in WWI, can’t bear to permit Helen to step into harm’s way, where Frieda knows she could pay the ultimate price. Frieda’s harrowing journey from childhood to motherhood taught her to worship safety and security above all else, fear the danger and unpredictability of the unknown. Mother and daugher are caught in a timeless struggle of youthful bravado versus caution born of life experience in this tale celebrating the triumph of the human spirit.
